MySQL Database Administrator — Job Description 5 Oct 2026 Role Overview We are looking for an experienced MySQL Database Administrator with 5-6 years of hands-on experience managing production MySQL environments at scale. The role owns the availability, performance, and security of our MySQL database infrastructure, working closely with engineering, infrastructure, and security teams to support high-transaction, business-critical systems. Key Responsibilities • Install, configure, upgrade, and maintain MySQL instances across development, staging, and production environments • Monitor database health, capacity, and performance; proactively tune queries, indexes, and server parameters • Design and maintain backup, restore, and disaster recovery procedures; run periodic recovery drills • Set up and manage replication (master-slave, master-master, Group Replication) and high-availability clusters • Manage user accounts, roles, and permissions; enforce database security policies and audit access • Plan and execute schema changes, version upgrades, and migrations with minimal downtime • Troubleshoot production incidents, perform root-cause analysis, and implement preventive fixes • Automate routine DBA tasks using scripts (Shell/Python) and tools such as Percona Toolkit • Collaborate with application developers on query optimization, schema design, and data modeling • Maintain documentation for database architecture, runbooks, and standard operating procedures • Ensure compliance with data retention, encryption, and regulatory requirements (especially relevant in a banking/fintech environment) Required Skills & Experience • 5-6 years of experience as a MySQL Database Administrator in production environments • Strong command of MySQL internals: InnoDB storage engine, transactions, locking, and isolation levels • Hands-on experience with replication topologies (async/semi-sync replication, Group Replication) and failover tools (e.g., Orchestrator, MHA) • Proven experience with backup and recovery tools (mysqldump, Percona XtraBackup, MySQL Enterprise Backup) • Strong query performance tuning skills: EXPLAIN plans, index design, slow query log analysis • Experience with monitoring tools such as Percona Monitoring and Management (PMM), Prometheus/Grafana, or similar • Solid understanding of database security: user privilege management, encryption at rest/in transit, auditing • Proficiency in Linux administration and shell scripting; working knowledge of Python or similar for automation • Experience managing databases at scale (multi-TB datasets, high QPS, sharding or partitioning strategies) • Familiarity with version control (Git) and CI/CD practices for database change management • Strong incident management skills with experience in on-call rotations for production systems Good to Have • Exposure to other database systems (Aerospike, Redis) in a polyglot environment • Infrastructure-as-code experience (Terraform, Ansible) for provisioning database infrastructure • Experience with containerized database deployments (Docker, Kubernetes/Kubernetes operators for MySQL) • Knowledge of data masking, tokenization, or other techniques used to protect sensitive financial data • Prior experience in a banking, payments, or fintech environment with regulatory/compliance exposure • MySQL or Oracle certifications (e.g., Oracle MySQL Database Administrator) Education & Soft Skills • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field (or equivalent practical experience) • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with a methodical approach to troubleshooting • Clear written and verbal communication; able to explain database issues and trade-offs to non-DBA stakeholders • Ownership mindset with the ability to work independently and respond calmly under production pressure • Comfortable collaborating across engineering, infrastructure, and security team
