Role
Responsible for managing and maintaining database systems to ensure their availability, security, and optimal performance.
Responsibilities
• Manage and maintain databases to ensure their performance, reliability, security, and availability. This includes such things as database installation, configuration, patching, monitoring, backup and recovery, and performance tuning.
• Collaborate with development teams and other stakeholders to design, implement, and optimize database structures, schemas, and data models. This includes evaluating and recommending database technologies, designing database systems to meet performance and scalability requirements, and ensuring proper data integrity and security.
• Ensure that databases are compliant with SDD security policies, industry regulations, and best practices. This includes implementing and maintaining appropriate database security measures, such as access controls, encryption, auditing, and monitoring for potential security vulnerabilities or breaches.
• Analyze, diagnose, and resolve technical issues related to databases, such as performance problems, data corruption, and system failures. This requires strong problem-solving skills, technical knowledge, and the ability to propose and implement effective solutions or workarounds.
• Monitor and optimize database performance to ensure efficient and effective data retrieval and storage. This includes identifying and resolving performance bottlenecks, optimizing database queries, tuning database parameters, and implementing performance monitoring and alerting mechanisms.
• Implement and manage database backup and recovery processes to ensure data integrity and availability in case of data loss or system failures. This includes developing and testing backup and recovery strategies, scheduling and executing backup and recovery operations, and verifying the integrity of backup data.
• Plan and execute database upgrades and migrations to newer versions or different platforms. This includes assessing the impact of upgrades or migrations on existing applications and systems, developing and executing upgrade or migration plans, and ensuring data integrity and application compatibility.
• Monitoring and managing database capacity to ensure that databases have sufficient storage, computing resources, and performance capabilities to meet current and future needs. This includes analyzing database usage patterns, forecasting future growth, and planning and implementing capacity expansion or optimization measures.
• Develop and implement scripts, tools, and automation solutions to streamline and automate database administration tasks, such as provisioning, monitoring, and performance tuning.
• Collaborate with database vendors and service providers to manage vendor relationships, and support databases, ensuring timely resolution of issues and effective communication with vendors.
• Participate in change management processes, including planning, testing, and implementing changes to databases, ensuring minimal impact on production systems and adhering to change management policies and procedures.
• Create and maintain documentation related to database configurations, customizations, issues, resolutions, and other relevant information. This includes documenting database designs, installation and configuration procedures, troubleshooting guides, and best practices to ensure that knowledge is captured and shared effectively within the team and the SDD.
• Provide guidance, mentor, and technical leadership to junior database administrators or other team members, sharing knowledge and expertise, and contributing to the professional development of the team.
Skills
• In-depth knowledge and expertise in one or more database management systems such as Oracle, Microsoft SQL Server, MySQL, PostgreSQL, MongoDB, etc. This includes an understanding of database architecture, administration, configuration, and performance tuning.
• Proven experience in identifying and resolving performance bottlenecks, optimizing database configurations, query tuning, index management, data partitioning, and other techniques to improve database performance.
• Strong understanding of database security concepts, best practices, and industry standards. This includes knowledge of database authentication, authorization, encryption, auditing, and other security mechanisms to protect sensitive data.
• Proficiency in database backup and recovery strategies, including full, incremental, and differential backups, point-in-time recovery, and disaster recovery planning.
• Proficient in scripting languages such as SQL, PL/SQL, PowerShell, or Python to automate routine tasks, generate reports, and perform database maintenance activities.
• Experience with database monitoring and diagnostic tools to track and analyze database performance metrics, identify performance issues, and troubleshoot problems.
• Ability to analyze historical and current performance data to forecast future resource needs and plan for capacity requirements.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills to identify and resolve complex database-related issues, including performance, connectivity, data integrity, and other database-related problems.
• Ability to work effectively with cross-functional teams, such as development teams, system administrators, network teams, and other stakeholders.
• Excellent documentation skills to create and maintain technical documentation, performance reports, and other documentation related to database management, performance tuning, and optimization activities.
• Willingness to stay updated with the latest industry trends, best practices, and emerging technologies related to database administration and performance optimization, and ability to adapt to changing technologies and business requirements.
• Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
Qualifications and Work Experience
• Bachelor’s or master’s degree in applied science in information technology, or other related fields.
